Iskolánk múltjának vizsgálata során 1941-ig két patinás intézet történetét kell szemügyre vennünk. Ekkor olvadt össze az a két gimnázium, amely addig külön-külön is meghatározó szereplői voltak a magyar, s ezen belül a főváros közoktatásának. Iskolánk egyik elődjét, fővárosunk első állami gimnáziumát a "Pesti császári és királyi katolikus főgimnázium"-ot 1858-ban alapították. A másik intézmény története 1872-re nyúlik vissza. Ekkor alapították a későbbi Bolyai Gimnáziumot, fővárosunk 9. középiskoláját Budapest-Terézvárosi Állami Főreáltanoda néven.

Looking back on the slightly more than 140 years since Berzsenyi Dániel Gimnázium was founded, we could mention many events. Such a long period is very important even in the history of an institution. It includes a long period of our history beginning with the germanizing efforts in the years after the Hungarian War of Indepen­ dence was suppressed in 1849, the ideologically renewing currents of the turn of the century, rebellions and two World Wars tilt the events of the latest times. It can't be our aim to write a full school history within these narrow boundaries, therefore we grouped the events around the most important and outstanding years in the life of our school.
