Az Obszervatórium feladata a geodéziai célú űrtechnikák nemzetközi eredményeinek megismerése, kapcsolódó hazai K+F feladatok ellátása és az eredmények bevezetése a hazai gyakorlatba, valamint a hazai felsőrendű geodéziai hálózatok karbantartása és folyamatos fejlesztése, a Magyar Űrkutatási Iroda bázisintézményeként hazai és nemzetközi kutatási programok megvalósítása. A BME és az ELTE kihelyezett űrgeodéziai laboratóriumot üzemeltet a KGO-ban. Ismeretes, hogy a GPS technika bárhol a világon - bizonyos feltételek mellett - képes helymeghatározást végezni. Az egy vevővel történő meghatározás (abszolút meghatározás) pontossága azonban elmarad a geodézia igényeitől, ezért csakis a relatív mérési módszer jöhet szóba, amihez az országban bizonyos sűrűségben referenciapontokat kell biztosítani. A referenciapontokat meg kell határozni a GPS háromdimenziós koordináta-rendszerében. Szükséges, hogy ezek a pontok rendelkezzenek hagyományos koordinátákkal is.

The Observatory is engaged with research & development and technology transfer in space geodesy and related fields. We are responsible for introducing space geodetic techniques in the Hungarian surveying practice. We maintain and develop the national high-level geodetic network. As one of the core institutions in the Hungarian space activities, we are involved in international reserch and development projects. We operate a space geodesy laboratory in agreement with the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) and the Loránd Eötvös University (ELTE). It is well known that - under certain conditions - GPS allows positioning anywhere on the Earth surface. However, the accuracy of the absolute point positioning using a single receiver is insufficient for surveying. For surveyors, the only way is to perform relative measurements, for which reference points distributed all over the country are needed.
