In 1979 the Lake Fertő and the sur- rounding region were declared Bios- phere Reserve within the framework of the UNESCO-MAB Program. Since 1989, the area has been a Ramsar-site, one of the strictly protected areas of the Ramsar Convention on the conservati- on of wetland habitats.
