Pécs városának lakói először 1907-ben, az akkor megrendezésre került mezőgazdasági kiállításon találkoztak légijárművel, ami egy hidrogénnel töltött léghajó volt. Az első világháború után kijelölték a repülőtér helyét, ami a mai Uránváros helyén terült el.

A rendszerváltásig sport és hobby repülőtér volt, a rendszerváltás után már mezőgazdasági célokat is szolgált, de 1994 április óta légimentőbázis is üzemel itt. Az önkormányzati tulajdonban lévő repülőtér, az elmúlt években jelentős fejlődésen ment keresztül, hiszen 2003 áprilisától kezdődően megépült egy 1500 méter hosszú, 31 méter széles aszfaltborítású futópálya, 2004-ben pedig elkészült a légikikötő fény- és navigációs rendszere. A 2005. év őszétől 2006 tavaszáig tartó időszakban épült új fogadóépület elkészültével, és átadásával egy időben, nemzetközi menetrendszerinti járatot is fogadott a repülőtér, jelezvén, hogy ezzel bekerült, a világ légi közlekedésének hálózatába.

As of April 2003, the local city owners and authorities have taken the time to build a new asphalt runway which is 1500 meters long and 30 meters wide. In 2004 the airport was able to install a instrument landing system and runway lighting. From the fall of 2005 to the spring of 2006 a new international terminal building was built for the opening ceremony of scheduled service from the airport. With this the airport was now able to join the international network of flights.
